5 Ways to Reduce Food Waste
Wednesday 24th April was national stop food waste day, a day that is becoming increasingly important. In the UK there are currently 8 million people living in food poverty and every year we throw away around 13 billion pound worth of food. This is an extremely worrying statistic and highlights the greed and thoughtlessness that comes with the condition of being human. Most people given the chance would want to stop this wasteful behaviour and feed those that are hungry but not everyone will know how to do this. That is why this weeks Buddy?s Friday Five is ?5 ways to reduce food waste?.
- Don't over serve
The idea of massive portions is partly driven by restaurant culture, but it's started to trickle into our homes. If you are partial to big portions go for it just make sure that any excess food goes in the fridge for later and not in the bin!
- Treat use by and sell by dates as guidelines
Trust your senses instead of the date on the package. Trust your sense of smell and sight and taste. If you think it's safe go for it.
- Donate To Food Banks
Before you throw away excess food, look into food banks and charities where you can bring items you know you're not going to consume before they go bad. Food banks are a great way to stop the waste and hunger in communities. Recently food banks in the UK have been giving out more food than ever before.
- Shop Smart
It sounds simple, but this is one of the most important things you can do. When you go food shopping, make sure you don't buy too much food! It is easily done but if you make a list and stick to it you are much less likely to be throwing food away come the end of the week.
- Meal Prep
Yes meal prep isn't just for those that have a gym membership and lift on the daily it can be a great way to reduce waste. Planning meals for the week means that you can buy exactly what you need and nothing more saving money and waste. Organisation is key!
