The Importance of Careers Advice

The Importance of Careers Advice

As part of our desire to provide ongoing support to schools and share our passion for education, over the last week, I have spent my time volunteering at two Dorset based Secondary Schools providing careers advice to the next generation.

Working in partnership with schools, we are able to offer advice and guidance with ?real life? examples rather than made up scenarios. At Avonbourne Trust, alongside other employers, I helped Year 10s with mock interviews. For many, this was the first interview they would have had and despite the nerves, the students came across brilliantly. What was evident throughout the session was that the students were incredibly nervous which is why it is so important we conduct these mock interviews. They can practice and overcome nerves before they are in front of an employer.

Pippa Allner, Head of Careers and Employability at Avonbourne Trust, says:

?We are so grateful to Class People for giving up their valuable time to support our students. They really enjoyed the whole experience and have expressed that they now feel more prepared for future interviews.?

My second stop was Talbot Heath where I, alongside Education Consultant, Robert Dworak, conducted a workshop for Year 12s on CV writing, Interview Techniques and LinkedIn. Students were involved in a range of activities including brainstorming, group discussions and interactive presentations. Discussing what you should/shouldn?t include in a CV was interesting and the students had very different ideas. We were able to share real experiences and offer practical advice on what not to do and what not to ask!

With pressures on schools to achieve the highest grades, it is easy to forget why students are there in the first place ? to learn and to ultimately do well in their chosen careers. Due to time restraints it can be difficult to fit careers sessions in to the timetable but it is vital! All students were enthusiastic, engaged and were shocked to hear the longest CV I have received was 68 pages long and that someone once ate their sandwiches during an interview!

Jacinta Collins, Head of Careers at Talbot Heath School, explains:

?It has been invaluable for the students, with lots of positive feedback.?

As well as careers advice, Class People are able to volunteer at school events and offer sponsorship through the Class People Foundation.
