World Book Day 2019
World Book Day 2019
As a kid, I always loved World Book Day. Getting my mum to hand sew me a costume and the opportunity to dress as your favourite character always excited me. Now I have grown up (a little), I have come to see why World Book Day is so important in education.
World Book Day is a registered charity on a mission to give every child a book of their own and to celebrate the authors and illustrators that make our childhood so special. Essentially, it is a celebration of reading, and encourages children to explore the pleasure of doing so.
With the rise of iPad loving, tech-savvy children, I can see why World Book Day is even more important today. Due to the increase of digital entertainment available, the percentage of children reading books every week is decreasing. Currently, only 60% of children read every week. What will happen if this decreases?
World Book Day is there to inspire children to read through providing book tokens to almost 15 million children across the country, which they can then exchange for a free book. Due to the significant benefits of reading, ensuring every child has access to a book is highly important. For example, reading develops language skills, imagination and creativity in children, as well as enhancing their concentration.
Although child focused, how does World Book Day impact us ?adults?? By revisiting the importance of World Book Day for children, I have come to realise? I do not read enough. Reading is beneficial for both children and adults by stimulating cognitive activity, driving focus, and improving concentration. If we read, and our children see us reading, will this not influence them more? I believe so.
For this World Book Day Class People will be getting into the spirit and dressing up as our favourite book characters so keep tuned on our social media accounts to see our efforts. Who said World Book Day was only for the kids?! Please throughout the day let us know what you have been doing in your school or office to celebrate.
